I’m not a fan of wax or locking gel and after using them in my first set of dreadlocks. It has negatively affected my hair as my dread experience build-up.
With that in mind, let’s get started.
Tools Needed To Start Dreadlocks
If you have short hair, you can use a sponge or towel rub to start the locking process.
With dreadlocks longer than three inches- two-strand twist, braids or coil is the best method to start. For people with straight hair, a crochet needle will help give you instant dreads.
Furthermore, you’ll need to start with clean hair and a good clarifying shampoo.
An applicator bottle is vital for scalp health as it helps distribute your natural oils into your scalp. While the spray bottle focuses on your starter locs, great for rose water or any other liquids.
A silk scarf protects your dreads from lint build-up and keeps frizz at bay after a re-twist, so before bed is the perfect time to tie your hair.
Homemade Growth oil
Making your growth oil is the perfect way to add nutrients to your scalp. Oils like Jamaican Black Castor oil, Olive, peppermint, and Avocado oil are some common options.
Add them to an applicator bottle and apply them to your hair after installing starter locs.
Using rosewater on its own is another alternative that will help moisturize your dreadlocks. It is very important to moisturize your scalp to grow healthy locs.
Keep up with your moisturizing regime, for example, if you moisturize your hair once a day then continue with this.
Most people who change this schedule may experience excessive dry scalp or dandruff.
Wash You Starter Locs Every Week Or Two
Healthy dreadlocks require clean hair, there are an awful misconception around washing new dreads.
As a result, most beginners don’t wash there starter locs for the first six weeks. By doing this, you are delaying your hair locking process.
Hence, washing your hair every 1-2 weeks prevents unnecessary scalp buildup and dandruff.
Use a clarifying shampoo like the Neutrogena Anti-Residue to get rid of any buildup. After washing, moisturize your hair with rosewater or a homemade oil of your choice.
The best products for knowing how to start your dreadlocks vary from person to person. But there are a few things most people have in common like the tools, natural oils, and a trusted shampoo.
