Have you ever ask you self how these rappers get their dreadlocks and which method they used to lock their hair? In this post, I will examine five rappers dreads to find out which technique they may have used and whether it is freeform or maintained hair.
However, before I start, I’ll like to give you the definition of both free- form and maintained dreadlocks.
Freeform dreads also known as natural dreadlocks are- when you allow your hair to lock without little to no manipulation. Sometimes people will pull apart dreads to prevent them from matting into a huge lump. Rappers like Jcole and Jay Z have healthy free forms locs.
While maintained dreadlocks are locs that start off with a locking method, this can be a coil, two-strand twist or braid. These dreadlocks are re-twist every 1-3 months with the palm- rolling or interlocking technique.
For straight hair dreads, you can lock your hair using the twist and rip combined with crochet to get rid of loose hair. You can also free-form your dreads by not combing or brushing your hair.
Now that the important dreadlocks definitions are out of the way, we can proceed to the five rappers with dreads I’ve handpicked.
Playboi Carti Dreadlocks
Playboi Carti looks like he started with freeform dreads, after a while, he maintained his hair. The advantages of having dreadlocks are you can go from freeform to maintained or maintained to free-form, it’s up to you. Playboi Carti regularly styles his hair in the two-strand twist with rubber bands to the end. He has bleached and dyed his hair.
If you will bleach your hair to achieve his look, make sure a professional does the bleaching. Also, if you don’t want to start with the free-form method, you can use the coil technique and re-twist your hair.
Young Thug’s Dreadlocks
Young Thug has cut his dreadlocks off and reinstall them. There is no problem with this since sometimes you may not like the way your dreads are growing. He has 4c hair. So, he may have started his dreads with either one of the methods I mentioned above.
However, if I have to choose one, it looks like he started with the coil method. There are some instances where his dreadlocks seem longer and thicker. He is using dreadlocks extensions. Extensions with 100% human hair is a great way to regrow your hair. There are a couple of methods you can use to install them, but the popular way is with a crochet needle.
Lil Durk’s Dreadlocks
Lil Durk started with the coil method (twisting with gel) if you take a look at his older picture you’ll notice he has coils in his hair. This method is the easiest to achieve since you can twist your hair with your fingers or a rat-tail comb.
His dreads are super maintained and it looks like he re-twists his hair regularly. He sometimes styles his dreadlocks with the two strands twist and his hair is bleached.
Lil Baby’s Dreadlocks
After spending an hour looking through all Lil baby’s pictures and videos, I have concluded that he started with the coil method. After this, he continued re-twisting his hair with gel to achieve his super maintained dreadlocks.
He also has a temp fade that gives his dreads that fresh look. I am so glad to see a rapper who has not bleached their dreads. Lil Baby’s dreadlocks look very healthy at this stage, and I hope he continues with this style.
Polo G Dreadlocks
Polo G looks like he started with free-form or with a hair sponge. Again I love that he didn’t spoil his dreadlocks with bleaching or dyeing it in multiple colours. Further, he maintained his locs by re-twisting his hair and styles them in the two-strand twists.
I hope you love my list of rappers with dreadlocks and I’ll continue with this trend.
